A short story about us

It starts here, with a memory, a city, and a craft that found its way back to me.

Years of experience

Happy clients

I was born in Lucknow, but we moved to Mumbai when I was just about 2 years old. My maternal roots lie in that city, but I didn’t grow up with memories of it. I wasn’t close to my nani or my extended maternal family. Lucknow was familiar in name, but distant in experience.

What I did have, though, was my mother’s quiet love for the place she came from. The way she spoke about Lucknow, with warmth, with softness, and sometimes, with a little longing, stayed with me. I saw the city reflected in her values, her grace, and the way she carried herself. Through her, Lucknow lived on, quietly, in our home.

People often ask me, “Why Chikankari?”

And honestly, I didn’t grow up around it. But when I came across it later in life, something clicked. It felt familiar. Like it belonged to a part of me I hadn’t fully known, but had always been there. Through Chikankari, I began to reconnect, not just with the craft, but with my roots. With a part of my story that never had a chance to grow, but never really left either.

That’s how ALAYA came to life.

Not as a business idea, but as something personal. A gentle return to a place I barely knew, but always felt connected to. Alaya isn’t just a brand. It’s a reflection of softness, of identity, of something that feels like home.
